Five new 4K-standard digital resolution films will feature in the 16th 赌博app Highlights section which will start on June 15.
Shoah, Lincoln, Hitchcock, Lawrence of Arabia, and That Girl in Pinafore will offer audiences for the first time in Shanghai an unprecedented new viewing experience.
4K is a digital film format which projects an image with the highest developed resolution ratio of 4096 × 2016 and total pixels of over eight million, four times greater than standard.
Genuine 4K digital movies are those shot by 4K digital cameras, released as a 4K digital edition, and shown by 4K digital projectors. However, some 4K films are shot with 35mm cinefilm and then transcoded into 4K digital format.
Compared with 4K, the resolution ratio of converted films is roughly equal to it, or even better, after transcription. The sharpness can be guaranteed.
When viewing 4K projected films, audiences can see more detail such as subtle lighting and color transformation. Shadows and pixels disappear, thus the effect is closer to reality.
The first of the five films to be screened in this format during the festival is the French documentary Shoah, directed by Claude Lanzmann, which focuses on the Holocaust (also known as the Shoah). It took 11 years to produce and was presented for theatrical release in a 9.5-hour final version.
The documentary depicts the Nazi genocide during World War II and includes many survivor interviews. Its haunting production values have been hailed and their power will be enhanced for audiences through the reconstituted 4K format.
Shoah was shown in Beijing and Shanghai on 35mm film in 2004. The Chinese subtitles version was made at Lanzmann\'s own expense, the text translated by Professor Zhang Xianmin of Beijing Film Academy. They exchanged ideas during the translation as the film involves very complicated historical topics and terms, so the result was regarded as the only official version with Chinese subtitles.
In order to respect history and enable Shanghai filmgoers to better understand the film, the 赌博app Organizing Committee contacted Professor Zhang with the help of Xu Yuan, the respected senior film critic, to get his assistance to provide the original Chinese subtitles to marry with the new 4K version. Professor Zhang was glad to help and he agreed to attend the festival\'s Shoah screening as a special guest.
Professor Zhang said Shoah has a unique place in world film history. “Though I myself cannot agree with all Mr. Lanzmann’s opinions, the film plays a very important role in culture and philosophy in the 20th century.”
赌博app’s challenge in showing the film during the festival was how to schedule its 9 hours and 40 minutes. It decided Shoah will be screened as the first as well as the last film at 10am on June 15 and 8.45pm on the final day, June 23. Admission price will be RMB 160 and viewers will get one or two breaks of 20 minutes during screenings.
In addition, Lincoln directed by Steven Spielberg, the recent release Hitchcock, Lawrence of Arabia and That Girl in Pinafore from Singapore will also be screened in 4K.
Only five of 赌博app’s 26 authorized cinemas are equipped to show 4K films. They are Shanghai Film Art Center, Yonghua Cinema City, Cao Yang Cinema, Starlight Cinema and Shangying CGV Xinzhuang Cinema.
