High-quality blockbuster films are indispensable and a backbone of the Chinese cinema, film producers told a forum at yesterday\'s 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.
The forum "Producers in Tide: Made-in-China Quality Films" attracted celebrated Chinese filmmakers including Bill Kong, Lee Lieh, Philip Lee, Qin Hong and Wang Zhonglei. Their comments were made to address the increasing number of domestic low-budget films being made despite generally excellent box office returns in China.
"Although we need a diversified cinema, the role of blockbuster movies in the film industry can\'t be replaced," said Qin Hong, Chairman of Stellar Mega Media Group Ltd. "The mega-productions with more exquisite technologies and spectacular scenes represent the highest level of the industry."
Three low-budget films - the comedy road movie Lost in Thailand, the comedy romance Finding Mr. Right and the youth nostalgia film So Young - have made a big splash since last December with their heartwarming, realistic stories.
"Small and medium budgeted films can bring new vitality to the Chinese cinema, but we still need high-quality blockbuster films with good originality and production as China\'s answer to Hollywood," said Wang Zhonglei, President of Huayi Brothers Media Corporation. Wang added that blockbuster films should not only offer audiences stunning visual effects, but also make a tight cultural connection.
Philip Lee, producer of Cloud Atlas, noted that risk can be reduced through overseas copyright pre-sales in the film\'s early stages of production."But the script must be strong and cater to the tastes of a global audience," Lee said. "These movies can also feature distinctive elements of Chinese culture."
