South Korean director Roh Doek’s Very Ordinary Couple won the Best Feature accolade at the Asian New Talent Awards of the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival last night.
The awards ceremony also recognized Wong Chen-hsi from Singapore as Best Director for his film Innocents and Chinese director Liu Juan received the Jury Prix Award for the film Singing When We Are Young.
Roh graduated from the Department of Film at Seoul Institute of Art and the film was her debut feature.
The jury said Very Ordinary Couple was “a subtle, sensitive and truthful portrayal of life and people. It is well-made with confidence and professional directing skills. Through the very special eyes of the filmmaker we as the audience gradually walk into the story and are amazed by the subtle beauty that we have ignored in daily life.”
The film tells the story of a young couple’s office romance and how they change over time.
“It took us a long time to finish this film. Winning this award is unexpected,” Roh said. “Very Ordinary Couple was a film about love. For my next project I may try something different.”
Wong was awarded as best director because she “has shown superb control of storytelling and performance throughout the film. She uses ingenious devices to create a unique pace and rhythm which embodies powerful messages,” the jury said.
“We were in development for more than three years, and I’m just so grateful to everybody who pitched and helped this film,” Wong said.
All three winners of this year’s Asian New Talent Award are female filmmakers.
The jury panel for this year’s Asian New Talent Award was led by Chinese director and writer Lu Chuan. The international jury consisted of Aruna Vasudev,Choi Dong-hoon, Gary Kurtz and Laura Weissbecker.
