Following the 14 competition finalists of Golden Goblet Award, the Organizing Committee announced part of the selected documentaries and animations on June 4.
Selected Documentaries
Global Vision and Humanistic Care
The Jury Panel of Golden Goblet Award for documentary is chaired by the famous British director Malcolm Clarke (Chinese name: Ke Wensi) with Korean documentary director Dong-won Kim won and Chinese documentary director Sun Zengtian as the judges. After the selection, five documentaries “Meru”, “The Overnighters”, “Virunga”, “Factory Complex” and “The Verse of Us” tend to be selected as the “Best Documentaries” of Golden Goblet Award.
“The Verse of Us” from China is a cross-boundary project released in Shanghai International Film Festival last year by Wu Xiaobo, a well-known financial writer. Through the unique perspective “poetry”, the director tells a new story about the modern Chinese workers. It’s about six distinctive worker poets, the fireman who explodes mountains and stones for coal mine owners, the miner dwelling in the poetic earth’s core, the post-90s Foxconn assembly-line worker who jumped to his death, the woman textile worker who began to work at the age of 14, the Yi cashmere filler who is concerned about the fate of his ethnic culture and the forklift worker who suffers a lot of setbacks. With the poems that reflect the depths of China, the film speaks for 310 million Chinese workers and eventually deduces a symphony of destiny. The rough life quality and beautiful poems make the film both touching and shocking.
“Meru” records the stories about three “heavily armed” extreme mountaineering enthusiasts who try to conquer Mount Meru. The film which records the precipitous Mount Meru and the dangers the climber are facing is interspersed with long-distance shooting and delay effects, fully presenting the magnificent views of Mount Meru by multiple means. The daily life and the growth experience of Jimmy and others make people touched as well.
“The Overnighters” is a reflection of contradiction between migrant workers and city resources in America. Many cities are facing the same dilemma in migrant workers. On the one hand, welcoming people from the world is the morality advocated by the city; on the other hand, being limited in resources is a problem that truly exists. It is indeed hard to control the balance. The film is one of the Special Jury Prize Documentary winners at the 30th Sundance Film Festival.
“Virunga” presents a group of forest guards who fight to the death to protect wild animals and expose the facts boldly and the stories between them and severe threats from all parties. Yet, this story is still far from over. This excellent documentary shocked the audience around the world once it was launched last year and swept totally 23 awards. In addition, it won the Oscar nomination for the best feature documentary of this year.
“Factory Complex” is the reflection of the contemporary Korean filmmakers on the “sweat factory”. Divided into 3 parts, the film leads the audience to understand the severe environment and tragic treatment of women textile workers in the 1960s. The director’s first feature film “Jeju Prayer” is a record of the Jeju Uprising. The pursuit and reflection of national history are extended to “Factory Complex”, which is particularly valuable. The director has thus won the Silver Lion at this year’s Venice Biennale.
Selected Animations
Well Made Pieces with Distinct Features
Some presidents of the Jury Panel of Golden Goblet Award are Ishu Patel who has worked in National Film Board of Canada (NFB) for 25 years and enjoyed high reputation all over the world, Michel Fessler, a French playwright and Chang Guangxi, a Chinese director.
It’s determined by selectors six animations have the opportunity to win “Best Animation” of the Golden Goblet Award, namely “Moomins on the Riviera”, “Legend of a Rabbit: The Martial of Fire”, “The Secret World Adventures II”, “Shaun the Sheep”, “Song of the Sea” and “The Case of Hana & Alice”.
Chinese director Wang Yunfei’s “The Secret World Adventures II” continuously adopts the surprising art design of “The Secret World Adventures I”, showing a mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful world. Besides, a colorful underground kingdom different from that in the sun, self-made lovely characters of the animation theme and Big-face Monster are also added. In this animation, disputes and misunderstandings of different overground and underground ethnic groups are solved through kindness, love, tolerance and harmony, thus creating a beautiful world. As an animation film mainly aimed at children, it is well made with simple and intelligible arguments and attracts many adults by its interesting plots, showing the great progress of domestic animation films. Similarly, Rabbit 2 of “Legend of a Rabbit: The Martial of Fire”, a Chinese animation film, becomes extremely popular after defeating Bear Pa last episode. This time, he becomes more complacent and wants to leave the martial club to help others everywhere after subduing robbers in the money shop smartly. With compact plots, the film shows us an interesting, inspirational and touching martial arts world by rich descriptions of various martial arts figures. The details of all the fight scenes are rich, intense and exciting. The selection of the two films reveals the production level of China’s domestic animations.
“Hana & Alice”, a film shown in 2004, is one of the masterpieces of Shunji Iwai, a Japanese peculiar director. Now, Shunji Iwai who created the fairy tale of two close friends personally decides to continue with it and enrich the previous history of girls in the form of animation. As a newcomer to the animation field, Director Shunji combines image description and 3DCG technique boldly in order to create a real sense. Moreover, Suzuki Anne and Yu Aoi, dubbing specialists in the original, also cooperate to dub for their roles in the film.
“Song of the sea” was once nominated for “Best Animation” of Oscar. Its story comes from a Celtic folk legend. Saoirse who is the last Selkie elf has a seal appearance but can become a humanoid girl. She tries to go back to the sea. The film describes an era when the fairy tale world is coming to an end and all living beings only existing in the folk legends become more and more degenerate and corrupt under the influence of the modern society. They don’t want to go back to the sea at all, but Saoirse’s song is actually the only way to call them back. Therefore, she and her elder brother set foot on the trip back to the sea.
“Moomins on the Riviera” tells the story of Moomins who go vacationing on the Riviera. However, they actually come across undercurrents which they have never experienced during this rare vacation. Pictures and incidental music of the film are warm, touching and changeable, making people appreciate the Nordic flavor.
The film “Shaun the Sheep” tells the life story of a small sheep Shaun and his friends in a farm. This small sheep Shaun is so distinctive by virtue of his witty, funny, gentlemanlike and brave character and becomes a popular cartoon image throughout the world. This series of animations is famous all over the world. The big film is the commemorative piece to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series of animations.
