The Jury President of this year’s Golden Goblet Award is Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, whose 2014 film “Leviathan” won the “Best Screenplay" at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, the “Best Foreign Language Film” at the Golden Globe Awards in 2015 as well as an Academy Awards nomination for the “Best Foreign Film.”
At the press conference joined by the international jury of Golden Goblet Award yesterday, Zvyagintsev expressed that for him, the most important factor he looks for in movies is art.
“We’ll begin our work as jury today. Each of us may have different opinions on the movies we watch, so it’s our task to work together.” Zvyagintsev said, “And I hope to enjoy the real charm of movies during the festival.”
Chinese HK producer Shi Nansun said that being a jury member of the film festival is like taking a vacation of films. “It’s a delightful experience when we watch and talk about the films, and I’m looking forward to discussing with fellow jury members.” Shi said.
French director and screenwriter Philippe Muyl is known by the Chinese audience for his film “Le Papillon” (“The Butterfly”). His latest film “The Nightingale” is a Chinese-French co-production that has made him the first non-Chinese director to shoot a film in Chinese language. “I’m very happy to be part of the film festival and have the opportunity to watch many films. I watch them to learn and whether I like it or not, it’s a learning process.” he said.
The Jury Panel is also joined by Chinese director Cai Shangjun, Chinese actress Hao Lei, South Korean screenwriter Hie-jae Kim and American producer Ron Yerxa.
The 18th Shanghai International Film Festival has added two new categories of documentary and animation to the Golden Goblet Award for the first time.
The Jury Chairman of the documentary category is English documentary producer and director Malcolm Clarke, who has won Academy Awards twice. He said that he would be looking for films that show him something new about the world. “I’m looking for great stories since the fundamental building blocks of any good documentary are the story and characters.” he said.
Clarke is joined by South Korean documentary director Dong-won Kim and Chinese documentary director Sun Zengtian. Together they will review the five nominated documentaries.
The International Jury for the animation category is led by Indian director Ishu Patel. “The festival has been a wonderful opportunity. It’s the first time to introduce animation to the festival and I hope it continues and animation gets more exposure.” Patel said.
Chinese director Chang Guangxi said that the addition of the animation category in the festival is providing a good platform. And he hopes Chinese animations will develop and have a better future.
