Before Bruce Lee showed up in Hollywood, many of the Chinese people in Hollywood films were those playing Mahjong and smoking opium with a pigtail and prominent cheekbones, which was the impression of American people for Chinese labors and Shanghai. After Bruce Lee, Hollywood began to know that Chinese people know Kungfu.
In a narrow sense, people like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan have not only introduced Kungfu to the whole world, but also opened a window for the rest of the world to get to know China.
Chinese Kungfu is a combination of practicability and aesthetics. Quite a few Chinese choreographers going abroad have turned action movies into a new look. When action movie gradually becomes the favorite film genre of the audience worldwide, the 5000-year Chinese culture and philosophy underneath the moves are also spreading continuously and Chinese stories penetrating numerous families regardless the language barrier.
Kungfu has become an access code to interpret films and understand the world.
This year, the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival will hold the second session of “Jackie Chan Action Movie Week” where nearly 20 films will be screened. Today we’ll reveal the list of six outstanding action movies: the champion of Korean box office, Veteran that praises justice and punishes vice fully, Sicario with a depressing and sober atmosphere, nominated at Academy Award and No Escape, a breathtaking Southeast Asia escape film.
