Press conference of Turkey Showcase was held yesterday at Shanghai Film Art Center. The actors, actresses, directors, government ministers, guests and organizers took part in the event. Abdurrahman Celik, Copyright and Cinema General Directorate of Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism, had an exclusive interview with Daily News, and shared his opinions about cinema both in Turkey and in China.
Daily News: What is the reason for you to choose to have Turkey Showcase in the 12th Shanghai International Film Festival?
Abdurrahman Celik: As Shanghai International Film Festival is one of the most prestigious Film Festivals, not only in Asia but in the whole festival circuit. To us, it is not only a pleasure to be a part of this event but also an opportunity. We do consider this as a chance to introduce and promote Turkish Cinema in Asia. We know that the festival is greatly supported by Chinese film industry and has always a great selection and interesting mix of films especially in the competition. Of course it is a nice surprise for us to hear that Danny Boyle will head the Jury of this year\'s competition.
Daily News: What do you expect the Shanghai International Film Festival can bring to the Turkish Cinema?
Abdurrahman Celik: Shanghai International Film Festival offers a great opportunity for promoting Turkish films in Asia as a meeting point of famous and successful directors, producers, actors and actresses, as well as numerous films. We are also very excited to meet the Chinese audience as the films in “Turkish Showcase” will have their Chinese premieres at the Festival and we also have the directors of “Mommo The Bogeyman” and “Dot”, Atalay Tasdiken and Dervis Zaim respectively and Hatice Aslan, award winner actress of “Three Monkeys” to present the films. We look forward to have some feedback from the Chinese audience.
Daily News: Can you say something about the current Turkish Cinema?
Abdurrahman Celik: At the moment the Turkish Cinema is enjoying its turn. Many of the films have been traveling the festival circuit, including the Opening Film of the “Turkish Showcase” section here in Shanghai: Three Monkeys. There have been a notable increase at the number of the films celebrated with internationally prestigious awards at Cannes, San Sebastian, Tribeca, and Rotterdam and many others have all also found special acclaim on the international festival circuit. The film “Wrong Rosary” first screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and won Tiger Award; “Mommo The Bogeyman” was screened in Berlinale 2009 and highly appreciated. “Dot” was invited by many International Film Festivals and reached thousands of international audience. “Alone” is one of the blockbusters of the year 2009, which attracted almost two million audiences in Turkey. Hence, in terms of international exposure, 2008-2009 has been an especially lustrous year for Turkish Cinema. This is specially exciting for us as most of them were supported and sponsored by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and we are very proud of the recent development and glamour of Turkish Cinema. Some of those films will be presented to the audience and film professionals in Shanghai and we are expecting Turkish Cinema and culture to be known and understood in many aspects. We also hope that through the press coverage in Turkey, the project will also raise interest in the Asian Cinema in our country. I hope that this project will trigger the cultural relations between two countries and we will have the chance to host a Chinese Film Week in Turkey.
