Two new IMAX outlets will open next month in Shanghai in time for the highly-anticipated release of "Aftershock" by director Feng Xiaogang, officials from IMAX Corporation said yesterday at the ongoing 13th Shanghai International Film Festival.
"Aftershock" is the first Chinese film to be digitally re-mastered into the unique image and sound quality of the IMAX format.
Currently Peace Cinema is the only commercial cinema in China provided with IMAX screen. But by July 22, the official national release date of "Aftershock," city movie buffs can watch the IMAX 3D version of the film at two new outlets - Pudong\'s Stellar Cinema City and Wujiaochang\'s Wanda International Cineplex.
"Our momentum in China continues as we build on existing relationships with high profile exhibitors and enter the business of releasing local language IMAX releases," said Richard Gelfond, CEO of IMAX Corporation "We also hope to provide international market for Chinese films with IMAX technology and format."
So far, there are about 33 commercial IMAX cinemas in China. But the number will rapidly increase to 75 by 2012 due to the digital projection technology.
In addition to the first-tier cities like Shanghai and Beijing, IMAX Group is also considering to launch IMAX cinemas in Hangzhou, Wuhan and Changsha next year.
With sponsor logos and ads on the surface, these portable cinemas can offer lower ticket price for screening in those cities. They are also able to broadcast sports events such as the World Cup live in 3D technology.
