The jury of the Asian New Talent Award of the 13th Shanghai International Film Festival met the press yesterday morning.
Led by Chairman, Korean director Jin-ho Hur, British director Phil Agland, Janpanese producer Shozo Ichiyama, Hong Kong actress Michelle Yeoh and Chinese director Wanma-Caidan shared their views in selecting Asia\'s best new directors for the awards.
The awards are designed to find and support new directors in Asia. There will be over 10 movies from Asian countries to compete for the awards, which include The Best Director Award and The Best Movie Award. Each category will give the winner RMB150,000 prize money.
In explaining the definition and standard of New Currents of Asia, the Jury Chairman Jin-ho Hur said new does not necessarily mean young. New more refers to the novel approach used in creation and production.
Each judge has his or her own judgment in interpreting the word "young." For Japanese producer Shozo Ichiyama, who made several films with Jia Zhangke, such as Unknown Pleasures, World, 24 Cities, believes the way to see if the director is young is to see if the movie he made is surprising.
He said he was surprised when seeing Xiao Wu by Jia Zhangke several years ago, because no one made that kind of movie and this is the New Currents of Asia.
British director Phil Agland said he was learning the differences between Asian and Western movies from the ten movies participated.
Wanma-Caidan, one of the five judges, was himself a new talent award winner. He was awarded as the Best New Director in the 9th Shanghai International Film Festival. Last year, he won the Golden Goblet Award. But this is the first year he serves as a judge. When talking about the changing role, he talked it with ease.
"I have a bond with the Shanghai international film festival. It is the forth time for me to be here and twice with my own film. The first time I got the New Talent award, the second time I presented my project and the third time I came back with the Golden Goblet Award. This year, I am honored to be here as a judge."
"I hope there are more young Asian movie-makers who would persist in making films. Persistence is very important to new directors,” he said.
